When you are choosing a compressor to use with a paint gun, you need to make sure that the compressor you use does not inhibit the function of your air gun. Unfortunately, choosing a compressor for your paint gun is not always as easy as choosing the paint gun and compressor that come at the lowest price. Instead, you need to choose a compressor that will allow you to get the optimal performance from your spray gun.
Direct or Belt-Driven Compressor
A compressor uses a pump to force air into a holding tank. There are two ways to connect the motor to the pump. In a direct-driven compressor, the motor is coupled directly to the pump. Some of these models do not require lubrication. This means that you have less maintenance concerns and that you don’t have to worry about oil getting atomized in the paint and affecting coverage.
A belt-driven air compressor uses a belt and pulleys to connect the motor to the pump. This allows you to use a multiple stage motor to get greater power while using less electricity. For this reason, belt-driven compressors will typically have a larger tank.
The Size of the Compressor
When you choose a compressor for your air gun, you need to think about how you will use it. If you have a body shop, you probably won’t have to worry about taking your paint gun on the road. Thus, you can have a large, high-capacity, stationary compressor which will allow you to run multiple guns at the same time.
If you are a do-it-yourselfer, buying a smaller compressor will probably work best. A portable compressor will allow you to travel to where your work is needed.
A Compressed-Air Tank
Contractors sometimes have the need to take on painting tasks in places where there is no electricity. In these situations, it is sometimes helpful to have a portable tank that you can take with you to remote locations. While you will not be able to recharge the tank on site, it can still help you to take on jobs that you otherwise could not handle.
Choosing a compressor is a key part of preparing yourself to use a paint gun. Using a spray gun to paint a house can allow you to move quickly while still getting good coverage. If you want to run multiple spray guns on a job, then you should look for either a stationary or portable belt-driven compressor. Otherwise a direct-driven model will probably be sufficient for your needs.
